3.  Counseling Session

Step three is your initial counseling session where you and your professional counselor will begin to discuss the current issues in your life.  The first session begins the process of getting to know one another and discussing what you hope to achieve in counseling.  We will discuss your goals and a plan of treatment for achieving them.  Some individuals find that all they need is one session with a professional counselor, while others may find that they need a series of them to achieve their goals.

Cancellation Policy

Our mission is to help others work through their dilemmas in their life.  Nu Vision Counseling Professionals works diligently to schedule both day and evening appointments for our clients.  If our clients have to reschedule an appointment, we understand; however, our cancellation policy requires that we have a 24-hour notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.  Clients who habitually cancel will no longer be permitted to schedule an appointment without prepayment.  We reserve the right to refer clients who we do not feel are a good match for our counseling perspective and methodology.

Current clients who cancel less than 24-hours will be charged a regular session fee to the credit card on file.  If a client does not wish to place a credit card on file, sessions may be paid for in advance.  Each client will be given one appointment/session forgiveness as long as they are able to reschedule the appointment within five business days.  Please read the following information regarding insurance and fees.  It is important to understand our policies prior to scheduling an appointment with our office.  We always make our clients a priority, and ask that you do the same.

  • Our clients are private pay only and we do not accept insurance. I do not file insurance claims; however, I can provide my clients with what is referred to as a Super Bill which can be submitted to your carrier for payment or reimbursement.  Each individual carrier differs and therefore we cannot guarantee that you will be reimbursed for services that are rendered from our office.  This is commonly referred to as Out of Network or OON.

  • Our fee per hour is $100 for individual counseling.  Our fee per hour for couples counseling is $130 per hour.  Each session lasts approximately 50 minutes.

  • Your initial session is a little longer than the standard 50 minute session, simply because it is our first time together and there are many things that we need to cover prior to beginning the work of counseling.

  • Your first session is an hour and a half and is reflective in pricing.  A first session for an individual is $150, and a couples session or family session is $195.

  • Blocks of more than one hour may be scheduled if a client desires to.  This is generally done for intensive couples work and behavior modification for children.

  • PEC’s (Picture Exchange Communication System) are available for clients who are desirous of behavior modification with children who have maladaptive behaviors.  A PEC schedule is available for an additional charge and starts at $150.  All PEC schedules are customized for each individual client.
  • Intake paperwork will be completed during that time.  We ask that our clients complete a reservation and advance payment form prior to their first session with our office.

  • After your initial session with our office, clients may pay for services at the time that they are rendered using cash, check, HSA or any major credit card.
  • You may also pay for sessions in advance.  We do not bill third parties, and there are no exceptions.

You Don’t Take Insurance — Why?

There are many things to consider before using health insurance for mental health counseling:

  • An insurance company is diagnosis-driven, which means that all carriers require a diagnosis to process your claim.  All Insurance claims require a medical model diagnosis of some form, even if one doesn’t exist.  That’s simply the world of insurance.

  • This can affect or limit future insurance coverage and may inhibit certain employment opportunities.  What exactly does that mean?  You insurance carrier may allow for one or two sessions of counseling or therapy without a diagnosis; after that one will be required.  A provider will then be forced to diagnosis a client with anxiety, depression, etc.  That diagnosis is reported to your Medical Information Bureau; which everyone has.  A Medical Information Bureau or MIB gathers records on every insurance claim that is made in your name.  The MIB is a large record keeping system.

  • Move forward five years.  You decide that you want to get a life insurance policy for $200,000.  The nice insurance agent comes to your house to write your application.  You complete the application after being quoted what you think is a far price or premium.  You have made a major decision and will be committing to making monthly premiums for several years if not decades.  You sign away and patiently await for your policy.

  • Surprise!!!  The insurance agent brings back  to you “an offer” from the carrier which is “rated up”.  What does that mean?  You are now either “rated up” which means that there is an increase in the premiums or even denied because of the information that was revealed on your MIB.  The agent doesn’t know why there is a different price than the one that was quoted at the time of the application because all of your information on the MIB is protected under HIPPA.

  • Oh, and good luck trying to get erroneous information on your MIB removed.
  • By now you have completely forgotten or didn’t even know that you were given a diagnosis of anxiety or depression five years earlier when you were going through a tough time in your life.  Remember that nice therapist who was happy to see you and took your insurance?  All you wanted to do was save a little money and have your insurance carrier pay for your counseling.

  • The MIB is accessible to more than just insurance carriers, too.  It can be accessed by future employers, as well as others.  In addition to all of that…………..

  • The insurance company, not you, decides how many sessions are appropriate for your treatment.  Seems unfair to me.  What do you think?

  • Not only that, but private information, even under new privacy policies, is shared with insurance companies.  We completely disagree with that!  Now you know why we do not take insurance.  It is highly unlikely that we ever will.

Using insurance to pay for your counseling sessions is a decision you and only you  make. I feel it is important to be informed about the insurance/medical system industry.

If you decide to ask for a Super Bill so that you insurance carrier can pay for your claim, think twice please.  We love insurance carriers, just not when it comes to counseling and helping our clients through rough patches in their lives.

For some, this is not a problem.  Heck, they’ve been struggling with depression, anxiety and more for many years.  Everyone in their family knows that and they don’t mind having one more medical provider submit their private information to the MIB for reporting.  You know you.  We understand.

As always, please feel free to contact our office for more information.
